85km round trip to see a medical specialist

Today I've done this trip to see a specialist Obstetrician. It took me two hours in travel for 10 min with the doctor. This was against the peak traffic flow, it would have been longer in peak traffic. I'm one of many women of child bearing age in Cardinia Shire (Pakenham) on the outskirts of Melbourne. The local council have indicated locally there are 4 babies born each day but yet to get high level assistance because you can't get pregnant you have to travel up and down the Monash Freeway to access help! I find this just adds to the stress of my medical predicament.

We are considered to be residents of a metropolitan area but we do not have the same geographic access to specialist even if they are practicing in our broader health region. They are alway located in closer to Melbourne rather than on the fringe where they are needed. I pay tax and the Medicare levy just like those living closer in. Resources need to be moved and balanced out across Melbourne, if this doesn't start now things will only get worse.

If one great thing was going to happen in your area next year, what would you want it to be?:
